A simulated BH lightcurve during a galaxy merger
This plot shows an example for a BH lightcurve (red line) from the high-resolution box of the Magneticum Simulations (68Mpc/uhr). The gray shaded region shows the time interval during which a merger with a mass ratio of 1:7 has been identified. The black line shows the Eddington limit, which is the maximum possible luminosity in our simulation depending on the BH mass. This example is particularly interesting since the average AGN luminosity clearly increases during the merger.
