Do galaxy mergers trigger AGN activity?
This plot shows that the fraction of AGN in both minor and major mergers (dashed and solid lines) is clearly higher than for non-merging galaxies (dotted lines). This is visible over a large range of redshifts and shows that galaxy mergers can indeed trigger AGN activity. Furthermore, we see a clear increase of AGN activity with increasing redshift. At z=2 almost every galaxy contains an AGN, also galaxies without a merger. For this plot I used Box2/hr of the Magneticum simulations.
